And Afterward the Dark

  1. AND AFTERWARD THE DARK - A black ink and color pencil drawing on a 9 x 12 size poster board. It appears on the dust jacket of the book, "And Afterward the Dark" by Basil Copper, published by Arkham House in 1977.

Jim Turner was editor at this time and when he phoned to offer me $1000 to do the DJ art for this book, he asked for a preliminary color sketch first for his approval. When he got it he phoned and said, "This is good enough to use as is, Steve, no need to do a finished painting." So I got paid $150 for the preliminary sketch instead of the $1000 I would have earned had I gone ahead with a finished painting. Turner did that to me three times before I wizened up and made my preliminary sketches so rough that he had no choice but to ask me to go ahead and do a finished painting.

Actually, for most book and magazine cover assignments I was not asked to do preliminary sketches, only Turner at Arkham House and the editor at Zebra Books asked for them.
